6 Experts Tips on How to Maintain a Curly Beard

There is a good chance you are reading this blog post because you either have a curly beard, or you suspect that your first beard may turn out being curly. The great news is that you are not alone and you have the support of your unruly bearded brothers behind you.  Curly beards are awesome, and you should embrace the look and rock it with full confidence.  Before we get into how to maintain an unruly beard, it is helpful to understand why curly facial hair exists.

Beards are often curly due to a combination of genetic, hormonal, and structural factors. The shape of the hair follicle plays a significant role in determining whether hair is straight or curly. Curly hair typically has an oval or asymmetrical shape, which causes the hair to curl as it grows out of the hair follicle. Hormones can also play a role, as testosterone can cause hair to become thicker and curlier. Genetics also play a role, as individuals with curly hair genes are more likely to have curly beards.

Now that we understand why beards are often curly, lets discuss 6 expert tips on what we can do to maximize the look and feel of your curly mane.

Tip #1 | Be Confident

Curly beards are awesome. Curly facial hair can give the appearance of a full and healthy beard as each individual beard hair takes on different directional growth and interweaves one another to shade out your skin. Imagine looking through a leafless tree in the fall, with each branch and twig interweaving each other and blocking the view on the other side. Curly beards can be thick, well groomed and something to marvel at.

Tip #2 | Wash Regulary

Curly beards can be more susceptible to trapping dirt, sweat, food and other debris due to the woven structure of the facial hair. It is important to wash your beard regularly using a high quality beard wash. Ideally you will be washing your mane 3-5 times per week or as needed. Be sure to use a high-quality beard wash that is gentle and PH optimized for the beard and skin so it won't strip away natural sebum, and leave your beard hair soft and conditioned.

Tip #3 | Detangling Brush

Most bearded gentlemen will use a boar's hairbrush to gently coax facial hair and distribute beard oil throughout. We recommend a boar's hairbrush for all types of beard hair.  However, if your beard is curly, you also need to invest in a quality detangling brush that can easily penetrate curly facial hair wet or dry, detangle and reset the beard without pulling, snagging or breaking the facial hair. Often designed for head hair and scalp, they work great for a curly and unruly beard.  I really enjoy using the Kent Gel Styling Brush as a detangling tool for my beard. You can purchase it on Amazon.

Tip #4 | Oil Twice Daily

You already know and understand the benefits of using premium beard oil.  You are also most likely using it after your morning shower. But are you using it at night? During sleep, the body's metabolic rate decreases, which can cause a decrease in the production of sebum. This can result in the beard hair becoming dry and brittle in the morning. Using beard oil at night before bed can help alleviate these issues and make your curly beard easier to control in the morning. Make sure you are using a beard oil at night that is ultra fast absorbing so you don't leave it on your pillow case.

Tip #5 | Own Your Routine

A well disciplined and effective beard care routine is especially important for curly manes. Sounds obvious and it is. Your beard needs extra TLC to look it's best, and that's the fun part of rocking a killer beard. For an example of a well structured beard care routine, click the link here.
